GROUP REPORTS 2021

Walking Group
The walking group has flourished this year. Since we meet outside we were lucky to be able to get together as soon as some Covid restrictions were relaxed.
During lockdown the Walking Group members kept in touch via WhatsApp, sharing beautiful photos of some of our individual, local walks.
We were fortunate as soon as we were allowed to meet up outside, the Walkers were able dust off their boots and meet up in groups of six. Everyone was so pleased to be able to meet others and walk with lovely company again.
Our first walk after lockdown was round Hoylake and Red Rocks.
By May we were permitted to walk as a group. We had a lovely walk round Heswall Fields and the Dales in glorious sunshine. Some walkers took a slightly shorter route but we all met up at the end for a very welcome drink.
Throughout the summer we enjoyed walks round West Kirby and Caldy,  Parkgate, Ness and Burton.
A large group celebrated “Big Green Week” in September with a guided walk on Heswall Dales. It was a very warm day and the Ranger took us round the Dales explaining about the conservation work being carried out in the area.
It was a rather wet morning when we met in October, but nevertheless we enjoyed a shortened walk from Caldy to West Kirby.
We always have an enjoyable time on the walks. There is always plenty of chatter and laughter as we walk along. Members come along on their own or with others and the walks provide a wonderful opportunity to make new friends.
We are so lucky to live in a beautiful area with such varied scenery and so many footpaths.
Any new walkers would be most welcome.

Art Group

The Covid crisis had an impact on our meetings and activities early in the year but we kept in touch and continued to produce artwork regularly.
After restrictions were eased in the summer we met in gardens or for coffee and continued our ‘themes’ idea. Every fortnight we focussed on a specific topic and produced something that we thought fitted the criteria. However, now we are back to our full programme of regular meetings, on the First Monday and Third Thursday of each month.
In September 21, when members felt ready, we found a new venue which suited our needs really well. It has plenty of space and freedom to move around, is well ventilated, and has a kitchen and a garden that we will be able to use next year in good weather.
Our diaries for 2022 are filling up with exhibitions to visit and new skills to learn and we hope to reschedule some of our activities that had to be cancelled during Covid.  Before that we have a busy autumn and of course Christmas party to enjoy.

We remain a close knit supportive group and enjoy our meetings and the friendships we have made through the medium of Art.

Reading Bees

The group has been avidly reading a range of literature over the last twelve months. While meeting face to face was not possible members continued to meet monthly through Zoom so that they could discuss their book choices. Once restrictions eased the group met socially at the Red Fox for lunch. The monthly meeting moved to the Otto Lounge and then to the Black Horse in Lower Heswall. It’s been a successful year’s reading!

FitSteps

FitSteps, with instructor Sarah Boyd, started up again in September this year.  The 45 minute classes now take place every Monday during term time at 1pm at the Kylemore Centre, Pensby.  We're currently dancing to some of the Strictly music (and sharing our thoughts on which couple deserves to lift the glitter ball!)  New members are always welcome.  No booking required.

Ann Higginson

Heswall Honeys Gardening Group

Gardening has become a really important part of our lives in the last 18 months and members have had a lot of support from each other over the last year. The Whats App group has been particularly helpful in keeping members in touch, sharing a few jokes and for some gardening tips.
Our first outing in June was to visit 2 gardens in Parkgate and it was wonderful to see about 30 members there who were all so pleased to see each other again and spend an afternoon in these lovely gardens.
July was a busy month for us as we visited Clemley House cottage garden along with Wirral Belles WI gardening group and we had a talk about organic gardening and some delicious vegan cakes. Lots of members supported our NGS Open Garden and also Maggie Watson’s first NGS Open garden. Ann Higginson also had a delightful afternoon tea in her garden and raised a lot of money for Claire House.
In August members were treated to another gastronomic afternoon tea at a lovely garden in Lymm. This was followed by a tour of Liz Carter’s garden in Burton in September.
We haven’t started up our speaker meetings yet so we met at Premier Plants in October and then Gordale in November for coffee and a chat.
Small groups such as this are an excellent way of meeting members and becoming more involved and we are always pleased to welcome new gardeners.
Thank you to my committee of Kathy Bolger, Chris Brown, Pat Churchill, Sue Edwards and Karen Padden for their help and encouragement and we look forward to arranging an interesting programme for next year with talks starting again on the first Thursday afternoon in February.

Craft Group and Cheshire Show Group

The Craft Group has at long last started meeting again after having to find a new venue, day and time. At our first meeting in November at Newton Village Hall, it was great to welcome new and ‘old’ members. Heather Kimpton led the group making a Christmas decoration based on a Dorset Button.
Over the last 18 months the Cheshire Show Group has been keeping in touch via WhatsApp and through Zoom, thanks to Alison Adlard.
It was anticipated that we would have to prepare exhibits for 2021 show as ‘the show must go on’, but it didn’t. Instead we shared our Lockdown crafting projects and tried new crafts including macrame and Dorset Buttons (led by Heather).
Once we knew there wasn’t going to be a 2021 Cheshire Show, we undertook 2 projects for Heswall Honeys. As Lockdown eased, we were able to get on with these projects, meeting up in gardens when the weather permitted, and later indoors. The tablecloth and the Thankful Tree
banner have brought the group back together ready to prepare for next year’s show.
